STEMI Competitions

The following organizations have registered their Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) Competitions, Events and Olympiads. If you are aware of any further organizations that are active in STEMI please share this information with them. (See menu for further details)


Computer Olympiad

The Computer Olympiad, as the name implies, is an Olympiad for computer-using learners. It is aimed at high schools, but primary schools are welcome to enter. The First Round is a pen-and-paper aptitude test for which no computer is needed, and is taken at schools. There are separate second and third rounds for programming and application use. The second rounds are run at schools, the third rounds in Cape Town.


Computer Applications Olympiad

 

The Applications Olympiad challenges CAT learners, ICDL candidates and others who can use word processors, spreadsheets or databases.


Computer Programming Olympiad

The Programming Olympiad caters for IT learners and others who can program in a computer language such as Python, Java, Delphi or Pascal.


Cyber Junkyard Challenge

 

Cyber Junkyard is an industrial inter-tertiary competition aimed at bringing industry and education closer together. Teams from various tertiary institutions battle it out to complete a project according to a specific project brief.


Eskom Expo for Young Scientists

Eskom Expo for Young Scientists (Expo) is South Africa\'s primary and only existing science fair for school students, where they have an opportunity to exhibit their own scientific invstigations. Eskom Expo has 28 affiliated regions for students to participate.


First Lego League

Lego Robotics Competitions for learners 10 - 16 years of age. Children have 8 weeks to design and build a Lego robot using Mindstorm technology to solve as many missions in a playfield in 2 minutes 30 seconds.


Living Maths

Our Olympiad is the only competition in the world to cater for grade R-9. While it is aimed at ALL learners, the top students are stretched with BONUS questions.

 


Standard Bank University IT Challenge

 

The Standard Bank University IT Challenge is a competition for university students and challenges their ability to work as a team and program solutions. The heats take place at universities, the finals in Johannesburg.



ThinkQuest

ThinkQuest is an international competition which combines creativity, teamwork and technology. It offers opportunities to create websites, blogs, photo-essays, etc for the 8 to 19 age group.


ThinkQuest Application Development

ThinkQuest Application Development is an international competition for older students (13 to 22). Teams develop a web-based application or game that solves a problem


UCT Mathematics Competition

The UCT Mathematics Competition, established in 1977, is an annual event for high schools in the Western Cape, held on the University of Cape Town campus. About 7000 learners participate in the competition each year, and invitations are sent to 400 high schools in the Western Cape. Each school can enter five individuals and five pairs per grade. Separate problems are set for each grade, from 8 to 12.
