MicroBit Project: Beating heart https://microbit.org/projects/make-it-code-it/beating-heart/

Description: Make your micro:bit’s heartbeat using loops

Level: Beginner

Grade CAPS Topic CAPS Description Possible Ideas Extension
7 The Circulatory System Learners study the structure and function of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. This includes understanding how the heart pumps blood, the pathway of blood circulation, and the role of the circulatory system in transporting nutrients and gases. Complete the basic tutorial on the Flashing Heart Project
8 The Circulatory System This topic delves deeper into the anatomy of the heart, including the chambers, valves, and the conduction system. Learners explore how the heart’s electrical impulses regulate heartbeat and how the circulatory system maintains homeostasis. Complete the basic tutorial on the Flashing Heart Project Modify the Heartbeat to add a Pause timer of 1 second.
9 The Circulatory System In Grade 9, learners examine the heart’s structure and function in greater detail, focusing on aspects like heart rate, blood pressure, and the impact of lifestyle choices on cardiovascular health. They also study the effects of diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis on the circulatory system. Complete the basic tutorial on the Flashing Heart Project Modify the Heartbeat to add a second small heart Icon or generate your own using the Show LEDs. Add a Pause timer of 1 second between switching between the large and the small heart.
10 The Circulatory System Learners study the structure and function of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. This includes understanding how the heart pumps blood, the pathway of blood circulation, and the role of the circulatory system in transporting nutrients and gases. Simulate the heartrate of 60 beats per second.

Describe the blood flow through the arteries and veins of the body

Use the Button A to have a heartbeat of 60 Beats per minute and Button B for a heartbeat of 90.

Set the project up as a JavaScript / Python File

Grade 10-12

11 The Heart and Circulatory System This topic delves deeper into the anatomy of the heart, including the chambers, valves, and the conduction system. Learners explore how the heart’s electrical impulses regulate heartbeat and how the circulatory system maintains homeostasis. Simulate the heartrate of 60 beats per second when Button A is pressed and 90 beats per minute when Button B is pressed.
Research how the heart rate is increase by the nervous system
Add a 3rd and 4th heartbeat of your own choice. Your partner must calculate the heart rate using a timer. Compare the calculated heart rate with the actual to see the accuracy (as a percentage) of the readings.

Compare results from the whole class and calculate the level of accuracy as a percentage.

12 The Heart and Circulatory System In Grade 12, learners examine the heart’s structure and function in greater detail, focusing on aspects like heart rate, blood pressure, and the impact of lifestyle choices on cardiovascular health. They also study the effects of diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis on the circulatory system. Simulate the heartbeat of increasing from 60 to 90 beats per minute over a period of 60 seconds.

Discuss the importance of this in terms of respiratory and circulatory system

Have a partner measure their heart rate after 5 minutes of rest. Set this rate for Button A.

Have them

–        Walk around the classroom (Button B)

–        Up a flight of steps (Button A+B)

–        Hold their breath for as long as possible (Logo pressed)

Discuss your findings in groups
