Origins of the Concept
The 2023 Cape Town taxi strike, also known as the 2023 Western Cape taxi strike, was a dispute between minibus taxi operators and the City of Cape Town. It started on Thursday, 3 August 2023, where the Taxi operators claimed that minibus taxi drivers had been unfairly targeted by authorities resulting in taxis being impounded as well as other grievances. The outcome was major disruptions to many communities especially in Philippi and Nyanga in the Cape Town area, where five people were reported to have died.
The intention is to raise awareness of the difficulties that many people face on a daily basis as they commute to and from work, school, shopping, etc.
Competition Details
The task is to successfully negotiate through the Mat and accumulate as many points as possible on route.
You are allowed to have fun as well.
Suggestions
- It is suggested that you treat each sub-challenge as a task and programme it accordingly.
- Aim to start and end at key points on the mat. The end points are the start of the next leg.
- Complete a few runs for each leg to resolve any issues and to get a better idea of where you will finish.
- Practice makes perfect.
- Plan for ‘failure as we are all humans’ by nature.

Competition Week
A competition week will be identified and shared with you. This means that:-
- the Competition mat will only be available during the week of the competition
- each team can practice as many times on other mat in preparation for the competition
- as many teams as possible can compete during the Competition Week
- your teacher will record your details and results during the Competition week and submit them
- the overall winner will be announced once all the Team Sheets have been submitted

- Hint : Work on individual components where you aim to start at certain points. When you are ready then merge them all different components together. Developing a team strategy is key.
