EXTRA – St Alban’s College

With the trouble in the township on Wednesday morning I was not able to complete two schools that day so decided to approach Tom Hamilton, the Principal of the St Alban’s College, to see if they would like a demonstration. He jumped at the opportunity as asked Chris Mouton to arrange it with me.

It was an early start to the day as the lessons for the Grade 7s had to be borrowed. Even though I had taught at the College for 15 years up until 2006 I still find it pleasing to hear the learners greet you as they work past almost without fail.

It was still early in the morning with the Autumn sun battling to peep over the buildings into the courtyard. The solar demonstration did work but it was not as powerful as it could have been. The wind turbine provoked an interesting question. Does the temperature of the air flowing over the blades have an impact on the amount of energy transferred? This lead to a discussion of why fully laden international flights only take off from OR Tambo in the evenings. I was impressed with all the questions as they showed great insight into the work.
