Grade 9 Presentation
What a way to end the Gauteng leg of the training. It started on a high note and went uphill all the way to the bright minds of the boys from Alban’s College in Pretoria. It was like coming home as everyone, from the headmaster to the ground staff welcomed me with open arms.
I was severely challenged to think on my feet to answer many questions. Apparently Sasol had sponsored the school to design and build a solar powered car to race in the Solar Challenge all the way to Cape Town later this year. Now this is real science in action and will do a lot for education in general.
With that said I resorted to my trick of proving the importance of being able to apply knowledge on the ground and not just to have book knowledge with the introduction of identifying where North is. Many of the learners were able to point in the rough direction but there were a few who manage to point upwards.
All
sections were covered adequately. Given the exciting Solar Challenge where a few of the Grade 9s will participate, the work covered was highly relevant.
Grade 11 Presentation – (120 learners)
Clean Energy in relations to an Afrikaans Poem – Having taught at the College for 15 years I had encountered Mr Nico Du Plessis the previous day. He inquired why I was visiting the College and immediately booked me for the same session with all the Grade 11 learners. The purpose of the exercise was to present on the topic of Clean Energy and link it to a poem which they were covering in Afrikaans. It will be interesting to hear the orals of the learners and what information they picked up on. It was also pleasing to see that all the Afrikaans teachers were present during the session.
