B A Seobi High, Potchefstroom, 08 May 2018

(270 Learners)
Seobi was a little further on from Boitshoko High and I arrived there in time for the 10:00 lesson. I was met by a very friendly headmaster and was soon set up in the same spot that I had used during last year’s demonstration in the school courtyard in the full sun.
The dynamics of this large group was very encouraging as they were not shy to provide answers. There are a number of topics which are close to my heart and I feel compelled to share this with every group. These include:-
• the importance of taking pure Mathematics in Grade 10-12 in order to be accepted into medical, engineering, science, law and accounting faculties at university
• encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEMI
• encouraging girls to be more assertive and to stand up for their rights to a better education
• girls pursuing career ahead of starting families, including teenage pregnancy
• book knowledge needs to be translated into applied knowledge
I am fascinated by how many learners have no clue of directions including which way North is. A large number of learners point upwards to indicate North which reinforces the notion that there is no translation into applied knowledge.
The changes in dynamics of the groups may well be attributed to the manner in which the demonstrations are introduced. I am very aware of making minor changes to the presentation while taking note of the reactions of the learners. Each session covers the same content but different responses lead to different outcomes to cater for the needs to the group.
