Coordinating flights and more importantly access to the lock up storage units in Midrand can be problematic. I arrived at the storage unit just after 6 am just as the traffic was starting to build up behind Grand Central airport. It was not long before I had loaded 16 LEGO Boxes and 8 Solar Energy kits and a few spare CEE Handbooks.
The trip to Modimoli was uneventful and I arrived just after 09:00. Petunia had called to confirm the arrangements and I found the school with ease. The roads in the local township are a combination of brick roads and mostly dirt roads with many adults and children loitering around the various shack dwellings going about their daily business.
The Deputy Principle and I agreed to the area for the demonstration and it was not long before I was unpacking my equipment as part of my routine with a few extras thrown in here and there. It has been a while since I had teachers shouting out the answers and I was encouraged to hear some chirps from one of the male members of staff, a real asset to the staff.
I am still uncertain as to how many learners to include in the demonstrations. By limiting the numbers one has to make the difficult choice of who to include and who to exclude. The group was very positive and it was right to have included all the grade 9 learners.
There were a number of staff present and they were most encouraged by what they saw. The Physical Science teacher asked if one of her Grade 11 learners (Fred) could accompany me to the next school as he was working on a Science Expo Project with Hydrogen Fuel.
