Rustenburg, Thethe High, 18 April 2018

(92 learners)

The ritual of locating schools began early on arrival in the Ga-Luka region outside Rustenburg. After asking for directions from a few locals we arrived at the school which was built in 1987 sponsored by the Royal Bofakeng Nation.

The first impressions was that of a well resourced school with impressive buildings but there were none of the usual school noises. After completing the customary duties of introducing ourselves we met the Deputy Principal who informed us that they were not aware of the CEE demonstration. They were, however, happy to accommodate us with an electrical point and a table in the sun. After consulting with Mr Badigelo of the education department it was pointed out that there was a breakdown in communications which was outside his control and he assured me that the notifications had been sent out as per schedule.

From the first interactions with the learners it was noticed that they were well disciplined and eagerly engaged in the discussions. Also apparent were a larger then usual number of girls answering questions and were rewarded with a handbook.

At the end of the session one of the teachers remarked that they found it strange that the lesson had taken place outside. The learners are usually shown videos in lectures but rarely taken outside. They liked the idea of being outside.
