(3 Grade 9 and 9 Grade 8 learners)
It was a rather chilly morning just above freezing point when I arrived at the school in the bush. It was breakfast time and the chit chat of excited learners was evident in the air. This is a close knit community where the learners are cared for on a personal basis with hostel accommodation for all from Monday to Friday and some over weekends. The staff are amazing which comes to the fore when one witnesses the interaction with each individual on a personal name basis.
Emmanuel met me and suggested that we use the Science Lab at the bottom of the school yard. It was simply a small room which could accommodate a dozen learners. The entrance provided a covered area and it was in full sunlight with two tables in the full sun light already waiting.
The school is small catering for 3 Grade 9 learners so it was decided to include the Grade 8 class as well making up a total of 12. They have normal aspirations of becoming doctors, engineers, scientists, etc. Most of the group had participated in the demonstration last year when virtually the whole school were exposed to the program. I was challenged to provide alternative demonstrations to cover the same principles including using a solar panel to charge the super capacitor. The gases from the electrolyser were captured using syringes instead of using the downward displacement of water in separate compartments.
All in all it was a successful session. There was time to drop in and see Kim who was laid low with a knee injury. She is doing some incredible work for this community and must be commended for her dedications.
