The Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa (YESA) is an initiative aimed at increasing the pipeline Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI). YESA interventions operate from Grades 0-12 and are designed to supplement the national curriculum in a stimulating and challenging environment to promote creativity and innovation. All interventions are aimed at addressing the gaps in the developmental stages of providing support to learners through a broad range of activities.

President Jacob Zuma’s new cabinet as announced on 10 May 2009, necessitated the establishment, reorganization, and renaming of some of the national departments to support Ministers in the execution of their mandates. In his statement, the President emphasized the importance of the type of structure that would best serve government’s goals. “We wanted a structure that would enable us to achieve visible and tangible socio-economic development within the next five years. It should be a structure which would enable us to effectively implement our policies…”, President Zuma said.

The Department of Science and Technology of South Africa developed the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technologies (HFCT) Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Strategy. The National Strategy was branded Hydrogen South Africa (HySA). The overall goal of HySA is to develop and guide innovation along the value chain of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in South Africa. The overall vision of the HFCT RDI strategy is to bring about wealth, jobs and IPR creation through the initiation of new high-technology industries based on minerals found on South African soil, especially Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). Allied to this is the goal of the developing cost competitive solution for the generating hydrogen locally focusing on using renewable energy, and the supporting enabling goal of developing a range of high-level skills, generally in accordance with the required human capital development strategy.

The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is the first national renewable energy technology centre in South Africa and has been established at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) – Bellville campus, Cape Town, South Africa. SARETEC offers specialized industry-related and accredited training for the entire renewable energy (RE) industry along with tailored short courses and workshops.

A large part of EERE technology deployment depends on the U.S.’s ability to innovate, produce, install, maintain, and service advanced energy technologies. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) education and workforce development activities support the market deployment of EERE technologies by focusing on further development and enhancement of these critical workforce skills as well as engaging and inspiring the future workforce.

The Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) initiative was launched by the 24-government Clean Energy Ministerial in 2010. The initiative was born out of recognition that the ideas and talents of all members of society are essential to meeting our future clean energy challenges. Women make up substantially less than half of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and across the clean energy sector. Closing the gender gap and increasing women’s participation and leadership in these fields are the goals of the U.S. C3E program, led by the Department of Energy in collaboration with the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy.
