CEE Finals 14/10/16
The finals of the Clean Energy Education competition took place at the Swartkops Race Track on 16 October. Issued with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell and LEGO donated by Care for Education they had to design, build and race their cars, prepare a poster, portfolio as well as a presentation on their research findings – while working in teams.
What a wonderful experience for all concerned as it showcased the innovation of learners once again. This included introducing balloons alternative ‘fuel tanks’, the use of a transformer to generate hydrogen, reducing the length of the syringe plungers to save on weight, etc. The first time trials were in the region of 2 minutes for the 10m track this was soon smashed to 17s and then finally 13s. In terms of distance record stood at 33,2m.
All teams from were winners in their own rights and must be commended for their efforts. Parktown Girls High, Rephafogile Secondary, Stanza Bopape Secondary and Trinityhouse Littlefalls. South Africa needs more individuals like this who can grow the Hydrogen industry.
To the teachers, a big thank you for allowing the teams to take ownership this project based learning experience. Thanks must also go to Corney Keefer of the University of Johannesburg and Gordon Freer for their support in the overall project, Finally to the Platinum Trust, thank you for making a difference in the lives of these learners.
