Rustenburg, Molotlegi, 18 April 2018
(98 learners)
The friendliness of everyone, including staff and learners, is immensely noticeable. Having done several demonstrations this was certainly the first school to offer coffee while waiting. The spirit of ubuntu lives on and leaves a lasting impression of the visit.
A tree in the front of the school and a coffee table from the foyer served as the classroom with an extension lead from the office building to power the fan that had been transported from Port Elizabeth as part of my luggage. The 98 learners formed a big circle around the table where the smaller number in the group made it easier to engage with them. A notable achievement was a young girl coming up with the engineering challenge of the wind turbine. It was pleasing to note that she was planning on taking up engineering as a career.
The teacher stepped in to point out that the work that was being discussed would be covered in the Natural Science curriculum in the coming days and it was highly relevant. There was a keen interest in the handbooks as well.
On arrival in the region we had noticed a young lady preparing food on the side of the road and made a note to visit her on our return as it was very close to the Molotlegi school. We had to stop to enjoy locally made vetkoek for lunch. It was certainly a less stressful day as there was time to talk to the staff and learners after the demonstration rather than having to pack up and race to the next venue.
